The following appears on the Roland website you obviously feel they played an important role in getting Missy Higgins started.

http://www.rolandcorp.com.au/promos/Missy/missyhigginsstory.htm

Do you think Missy Higgins had an advantage in JJJ's unearthed due to her Geelong Grammar (yes, that's the Prince Charles School) connection and the quality of recording that would have produced? I don't think Roland reps are visiting your average under funded government school.

Personally, I think Missy would have made it anyway, but it definitely paints a different picture to the shy, understated, "her sister entered her in the comp and she didn't know anything" line her management keep pushing.

The Bumblebeez is living proof that privilege doesn't come into winning Unearthed. Hell, you don't even have to sound good.

There are too mne implications when u attempt to assess that statement... On the one hand, for sure shes been given more opportunities due to a priviliged upbringing. Yet on the other with all the crap thats out there its hard to say what contributes... If u hear of say the likes of 50c theyd have u believe that theyve rescued him from the ghettos and slums of downtown detroit and that his music is a way of communicating 'abuse, drugs, gang wars and the like juxtaposed with a faint optimism that things will get better'. Call it a copout but id prefer to say that it was in Missys destiny that she would make it! I mean theres so much talent (especially local) that gets overlooked in order to make room for manufactured Aus idol type stars!

I'm not opposed to Aus Idol et al pumping out these acts, because I know that they cater for a completely different market to mine. I guess You Am I is the most obvious case for artists being pushed out because of these new acts, when BMG severed ties with them, but the truth is if you've got what it takes, you can succeed. Maybe not in terms of album sales, but let's face it- such acts have always depended more on their live takings.

For me, acts are only overlooked because people don't bother. Radio and tv has never been the be all and end all. The commercial broadcast media is inherently conservative in sticking to the proven acts because they need to look after the bottomline. Those who truly wish to discover talent can do so by turning up at gigs at the usual places. And that's where the community stations such as RRR, FBi and 2SER come in and build up the support.

i think missys song wouldve won unearthed even if it was only cheaply recorded at her local music store... i think the line the record label push is totally true, and like hinny said, you dont have to be loaded and with a totally done up record to win unearthed... i mean grinspoon were from wauchope then lismore for chrissakes!!!

You Am I are awesome!!!! I think that now sony and bmg have merged there aren't gonna be that many long-term contracts cos they are only interested in whats popular now in order to make as much $$$$ as possible.

What's the big deal?
She had to get it recorded somehow, those Roland people recorded it and her sister sent it off.
And why is this thread in Polls?
