hahaha, i havent heard anyone say drats in a while! :)
how was pride and prejudice's ending disappointing, if you know whats going to happen in the end already? or this movie didnt present the splendour of true love and marriage properly or something...? i want to see it just cos Keira Knightly makes a hotter Lizzie than the Jennifer Ehle chick in BBC production.
yeah I know what's gonna happen in the end, but I like to see it. You don't even see them get married

what- no wedding?!? what a gyp!!
does keira make it worth watching though? would you recommend it as a first date kinda movie perhaps...?
and yeah- everyone was good in Little Fish actually. 'finest performance of hugo weaving's career'. he did a really good job of making me feel uncomfortable especially.

1. The LOTR series.
A cult list, obviously. Look through it, and it's easy to see what happened. The cult films that are able to mobilise fanatics won.
10. Fight Club- cult number 1. Keep going...
9. Gone With The Wind- sheer masses of nostaglic ABC viewers
8. The Princess Bride- Ultimate fairytale story for Gen Xers, who of course dominate the Movie Show audience
7. Pulp Fiction- Le cult de Tarantino
6. Star Wars- Like they said in the show, Jedi was nearly considered an actual religion
5. Donnie Darko- Cult with a capital C, capital U, capital L and capital T.
4. Shawshank Redemption- If Princess Bride was ultimate fairytale story, this was the ultimate grunge story. Look up gritty in the dictionary, and it'll have Shawshank listed as a description.
3. Blade Runner- The greatest Sci-Fi film ever. Sci-fi. Cult. Internet voting. Duh!
2. Amelie- The true surprise of the lot. Chick Flick writ large.
1. The Lord of the Rings series- If there's a bigger cult than LOTR fans, I'd like to know what it is.

King Kong.
Gave it the benefit of the doubt.
Shouldn't have.
198 minutes of B-grade 'plotting' with some decent actors (who were duped into being) in it.
Dinosaur avalanche the highlight.

mm, gotta agree with you there, My Summer Of Love was hot. and while we're on the topic- Show Me Love, a swedish movie from 1998 is also amazing. they show it on SBS about once a year and i guarantee anyone whos not already lesbian will want to be one by the end of this movie.
wow, i just read the top 100 movies and i didnt realise people had such good taste! Muriels Wedding, the castle, look both ways, eternal sunshine, garden state, big lebowski, fargo- such great stuff. and best of all- no harry potter!
the only problem i have with the list is the lack of Disney, but you can't please everyone i suppose. And i really don't get what people's obsession with Blade Runner is....
ps- does anyone else have a family tradition of watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation on christmas night?

Disney shouldn't be anywhere near the list when there's just the one Miyazaki film there, with Spirited Away. None of the Pixar/Dreamworks and Disney animations compare to the Japanese master.
And i really don't get what people's obsession with Blade Runner is....
The sci-fi nerds would tell you that the production values are nothing short of brilliant, and with Han Solo as the lead, even better. The greenie treehuggers would tell you it's a top reflection on the need for humanity to embrace nature and not let it turn into such a dystopia. The bible-thumpers would say see, this is why only god should create life. The film aficionados would go into a long spiel about how the director's cut is just the perfect film with perfect subtlety, perfect character development, perfect plot, perfect score, perfect editing and perfect script.
Tinkers
25-12-2005, 03:57 PM
yeah, as a greenie tree hugger myself i fully support the values of Blade Runner, but i cant say i enjoy watching the movie- its so eerie and dark. i like that it promotes taking care of the environment and it bags out capitalism - but i’d prefer if it gave a positive message about how to avoid the world becoming a dystopia. the movie seems to say that destruction of the world is inevitable...which i dont believe it is. I dont see how anyone could watch that movie and not feel uncomfortable.
now Disney on the otherhand has absolutely everything you could ask for- good morals, humour that isnt based on swearing and sex, and those movies are generally pretty uplifting as well. i would have been happy to see Nemo on that list- that movie has made me cry twice, and id say it has about as much right to be there as Love Actually or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

You're not wrong there, but it wasn't made so the viewer feels comfortable. Kubrick's Dr Strangelove doesn't make people feel comfortable. Larry Clark's Kids is horrifying. Inarritu's 21 Grams . Aronofsky's Requiem For A Dream. And neither does Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin, my favourite for the year. It comes down to this- if you feel a film should always leave the audience feel better than before they came in, regardless of any moral arguments, then clearly something like Blade Runner wouldn't be recommended.
Me, I just find Disney works to be asinine. The world's never so black and white like that. A hero. A villain. Hero wins after tough slog. I guess Miyazaki, the supreme animator that he is, does the same in his films, but my dear god they're beautiful to look at.

Came back from Good Night, And Good Luck.
When I head off to the pictures, I see tend to be in near-empty screenings. So imagine my surprise when I get there to see this black and white film set in the 50s at Dendy Opera Quays, and it's packed. For good reason too. Marvellous performance of a great script, under top direction. Doubt anyone here will be interested, but the message of vigilance for civil liberties, for standing up to ideals up against commercial interests, for supporting hard hitting journalism over on top of meaningless voyeuristic materialism that passes for entertainment... Take a bow George Clooney.

Broken Flowers... what is there to say about it? Jim Jarmusch, king of minimalism, he of characters who go forth on journeys of discovery, to return to where they were at the beginning with certain lessons learnt, without simplistic resolutions. Combined with Bill Murray, master of the deadpan, the one actor who can twitch his eye and convey to the audience what others struggle to do so over 1000 words. This is STYLE, with a capital S.
Not for everyone, of course. People who want a beginning, a middle, and and end, will hate this. Screw them. They can stick to King Kong and LOTR and blah.

king kong was a waste of time- but given the fact that it took an hour for them to even get to the island and meet the monkey, your kid will most probably be asleep by them so she shouldn't have too many nightmares.
I had to cover my eyes during a lot of the scenes when dinosaurs were slowly eating people, and when the natives were going nuts- i found it pretty disturbing, all the close-ups of people baring their teeth and rolling there eyes around. it seemed to last about half an hour- did anyone else find it a bit Heart Of Darkness-esque? i keep expecting them to be referred to as 'savages'.
that said- King Kong has a nice underlying theme about not exploiting nature for money, so it wasn't all bad. I haven't seen Narnia but i think it'd be better for a child.

The scenes of the natives reminded me very much of Conrads masterpiece, thus definetely not suitable for a little tiger.
Ahh this films copped a fair bit of flack, and I can see why. However there were a few positives to be taken out of the film. Watts acting was pretty good if you ask me and the scenes where she's taming the beast were particularly well done. As you'd expect from a Peter Jackson big budget flick, the technology was also of a high degree. Finally the cinematography also deserves a mention :).

haha! dude, whats with you channelling Hinny these days?
Yeah good point- i dig Watts and i also dug the cinematography. There was this one sunset scene where Watts and Kong are sitting on a rock - very pretty.
The film also sent a very good message about why beastiality should be avoided (which my friend thinks was the main message of the movie)
still- the expensive, high tech film techniques that impressed me and made me think 'wow, thats a pretty realistic looking monkey' were wasted with the ludicrous ideas they had about running around under dinosaurs feet without getting killed, swinging on vines while dinosaurs tried to eat them, and most of all- the giant bugs scene and the idea of shooting at someone to get all the bugs off them.
(sorry for spoiling bits of the film, but Peter Jackson did that all by himself by including these scenes in there instead of cutting them out and saving us the excruciating pain)

Prozac Nation- Claimed to be the 'most controversial film of 2003' I thought, hey this film could be worth my while. Despite competent acting (and surprisingly depth/ range from Christina Ricci) this movie is a waste of time. Terrible plot that repeats itself over and over again.

When Ang Lee (responsible for the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), comes to the fore with something new, you know that credibility is more than likely going to be on offer. With exquisite cinematography, his ability to bring the best out of his actors and his ability to encapsulate emotion with as little words as possible, his films tend to be refreshing and thus well recieved.
His latest creation, Brokeback Mountain (or atleast the premise behind it) could well be an Oscar contender given the plethora of praises for the flick. Will definetely be one to see.

i personally loved it because it was so wacky and twisted and i love seeing Jim Carey looking all insane and self obsorbed. hmm
Very enjoyable. Charlie Kaufman at his weirdo best, and fantastic visuals from Michel Gondry. Brilliant soundtrack from Jon Brion. Much superior compared to their other collaboration, Human Nature. If you like the script, do catch Kaufman's other gems, Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.
If you want wacky non-linear stories, there's plenty more of them. Amores Perros, Bad Education, Talk To Her, 21 Grams, Memento, Magnolia.

Rachel McAdams is gorgeous!! First it was the notebook where her beauty seemed timeless... Then it was the hysterical Wedding Crashers (fantastic cameo by Ferrill) with a more contemporary brunette Mcadams gracing the screens. I bet she looks just as fine in her latest film.

seriously dude, you better have a damn good reason for calling rachel mcadams a tart...
shes an amazing actress and i've fallen in love every time she appears in another movie- she plays such different characters but they're always great. i saw Family Stone last night so i spent a good deal of time swooning over her then too (although i kinda forgot about her once Claire Danes came onscreen...)
I liked Family Stone a lot. it was predictable but it did a great job of just portraying family emotions and how hard it can be to fit in sometimes. except for the ending- stupidest thing ever.
but Rachel and Claire <3 <3 <3

Hinny, what happens when non-linear 'post-modern' films become conventional?
Kittens' heads explode.
Just saw The Constant Gardener, a conspiracy drama, which does cut back and forth as the audience and the male lead try to figure out just what is happening, on how the lead male character came to be in this particular situation. This film would not have been made 15 years ago, before that non-linear style poked its head forward. So in a sense it's already conventional. Directors and screen writers have taken this style and began to use it in their stories.
Bear in mind these movies are generally targeted at a left-of-centre audience. The mainstream will of course stick with films that are easier to understand and not take up as much of their brain, so the big Hollywood studios will keep making popcorn films to maximise business.
I'm sure there's a question I'm sposed to be answering, but I don't know what it is.

i love that movie- 'deflower...! deflower...!' and
'your aura...its purple!'
'what?'
"PURPLE! YOUR AURA IS PURPLE!!'
i could go on, but i wont.
so i watched The Butterfly Effect today. I didnt love it, but it was ok- it made me feel uncomfortable at times. I think it dealt well with how much child abuse can screw people up. and i agree with the idea that the way certain events are handled can have wildy different consequences...makes more sense to me than the idea of fate and destiny. But i think the movie tried to do too much- the same message was dealt with just as effectively in the Simpsons episode when homer travels back and forth through time with a magic toaster.

Hinny is playing along with the Oscars season. Good Night and Good Luck 3 weeks ago, Constant Garderner 2 weeks ago, Walk The Line last week, and Munich today.
GNaGL is the only deserving picture. The other 3 are entertaining, but do nothing special to deserve anything higher than 7 out of 10. TCG and Munich have fine performances undercut by poor direction. For WTL, a film about Johnny Cash shouldn't be so damn slick, but the actors did their best with the material they were given. For GNaGL, every single scene shot does the exact job it's sposed to do. All killer, no filler. Pity the subject matter of overbearing government power won't grab at the mainstream audience.

yeah, good night and good luck all the way.
I tried talking to my dad about how happy that movie made me, about how it gave me hope that not everyone in the media industry had completely sold out- especially given the fact that George Clooney made it. (which suggested that at least some people in hollywood approve of media criticism, and not everyone hates communists) and then my dad just said 'silly girl, that movie was set in the 50s, and is meant to make you realise that everything has gone to the s**t and everything bad he predicted would happen has already happened.'
so now i like it less. but i still think its such an important movie...and i so hope it wins an oscar. I have only watched a bit of Constant Gardener, but i loved the book and i strongly approve of what it says, so i hope that wins too.
i saw Brokeback mountain the other day. I still havent made up my mind... i love that a gay movie is so popular- the cinema was more packed than i've ever seen it before, and i saw a fair few people crying at the end of it which was touching. i didnt feel that moved myself...but i thought the cinematography was beautiful. Hmmm, id probably give it 4 stars.

Any seen any good movies recently? Anyone seen any not so good movies recently? Well in the past few weeks I've seen 3 movies - underworld evolution, the fog and brokeback mountain. If you've seen the original, you'll love underworld evolution. The fog was pretty boring and predictable as far as horror type movies go and most of the acting was pretty crap too. Sorry but im going to rave about brokeback mountain coz i absolutely loved it! Great story, great acting, great scenery and great directing. If you love dramas and romances, you must see this movie. Best acting i've seen from heath ledger but jake gyllenhaal was so much better! anyways enough from me, now lets here from you guys...

Saw "The Producers" last week. Very, very funny. It was almost a full house so that helped. Munich on Sunday. Some good acting on the part of Bana but yea like Hinny said, this was not Spielberg at his finest. Direction was too chopped and changed for my liking. Walk The Line on Tuesday, enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Outstanding acting by both Phoenix and Witherspoon and worthy of their Oscar nominations.

Finally saw BM. Kind of underwhelmed after all the hype. Yes, it was beautifully shot. Fine direction, and the slow pace was exactly what the film needed. Yes, the acting was great, with great chemistry between Ledger and Gyllenhall. Yes, the writing was great quality. And yes, the last two sequences with Ennis in Jack's room and in his trailer with his daughter, they were as good as any scene I've seen this year, but there's just something missing. Can't put my finger on it.
No tears from Hinny, but the middle aged bloke behind me and the two older women in front of me sobbed. And sobbed some more as the Willie Nelson and Rufus Wainwright songs played over the credits.

At the video shop, I'm the guy who hangs around the foreign language shelves. For a while now I've been attracted to a particular title, but always passed on it because I didn't want to pay the 7 bucks for the overnight premium rental. I got a message on the phone the other day about a special $2 deal, and I knew exactly what I wanted to see.
It's called Grave of The Fireflies. It's a Japanese anime film. It's also the most emotionally depressive film I have ever seen, and I have a tendency to seek out the more hard-hitting films at the arhouse cinema. There's been a fair few occasions when I bawled at some random tearjerker at the cinemas, and that's when it generally ends. I cry, I walk out, I get on with life. It's just a film. Except for that one time I saw Mysterious Skin, but I was more stunned than depressed after that.
This was different. The animation was immensely beautiful. It set out to be a tragedy right from the beginning, and it began with the actual conclusion, in telling the story as a long flashback.
Basically, it's about a couple of Japanese kids trying to survive WW2. They move around, and suffer from the effects of war along the way.
It's hard to say exactly how I feel. I do want to watch it again, because it really was brilliant. I'm not sure I'm up to it so soon. Not yet. Perhaps not for another 2 months. There's nothing gory about it at all. All the suffering is implied. It's not that it disgusted me. It's just that... it's made me numb.

One of my favourite movies is Hard Candy.
It's about a teenage girl who meets a photographer via the internet and how she supsects him of being a pedophile. Eventually she goes to his house and emerges as this "sadistic bitch who seems a little advanced for her age" hoping to expose him.
It's very good! Willow could probably second me on this..... She's watched it heaps!
It's got like... four characters in it like Sandra Oh (Hotness from Greys Anatomy), Ellen Page (Kitty from X-Men III), Patrick Wilson (That guy from Little Children with Kate Winslet) and another who has like a really minor role!
Speaking of Little Children that's also another movie what I really liked! I don't think it's been released on DVD yet but it should be out soon!

It's not a recent movie, it's from 2004, but if you guys haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it : "Enduring Love" with Samantha Morton. Don't be fooled by the title, it's not a mushy love story.

I had to study this book/movie in year 11...i never want to see or read it again :p Its not bad or anything..but like most things you have to study in school it just becomes a bit overdone. The books definitely the better of the two though, so if you really liked the movie you should read the book :)

That is kindof cool that you studied that book in highschool. I remember that we had to study all kindof ancient books that I hated, especially those from romanian literature, most of them were about aggrieved peasants.
But I do understand that you are sick of it. :)

Know of any good movies? If so share :)
The sea of girls on here may not agree with my taste but lately I have seen, and highly rate...
The Worlds fastest Indian (Im a bit of a bike head so for mine, this movie rocks)
Cars (very entertaining and clever, the little porsche chick was hot !)
In the past, movies I rate highly are...
Scarface (a must see gangster flick along with the Godfather trilogy)
Mad Max I and II (integral part of every boys growing up, forget Mad Max III)
Bridges of Madison County (bit of a chick flick, but it has Clint, and he is TOUGH in anything)
Saving Private Ryan (If returned servicemen said it was good, then its good)
The Unforgiven (for a cowboy movie they dont come much better)
Snatch (you may think Brad Pitt is hot, I just think hes a great actor)
Romper Stomper (just for the love scene between Russ and Jacqueline McKenzie :p , and check out those tatts !)

I saw bits of TMNT (because I work at a cinema), can't say I was impressed..
Yes, I loved Disturbia and it's humourous side.. I would have totally killed my mate if he did what Ronnie did!!
I LOVE Labyrinth, Neverending Story etc.. Such classics.. RIP good kids movies.
I also saw Pan's Labyrinth, which was really good.. Not as weird as I was expecting but great nonetheless.

Stardust!!
I saw it about a week ago it was awsome, such a cute movie. And the cast was great: Robert De Niro (I loved his character :D :D ), Michelle Pfeiffer, Peter O'Toole, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller ... I recommend it warmly. :)
Here is it's site: http://www.stardustmovie.com/
You can read there about the movie and there are all kinda other stuff, wallpapers and such to download, games, etc.

My absolute favourite is secrets and lies, not pretty but a good story and I love a happy ending.
Saw invasion last week and was pleasantly surprised. Local paper gave it a very dodgy 1 out of 5 but it's more a 3 in my book.
Also love panic room, elizabeth and silence of the lambs

Recently saw Stardust, it was alright although I must admit that the preview of the movie made it look good...as far as graphics are concerned I wasn't too sure...but I enjoyed it so I do recommend people to watch it!
umm what else...oh I saw The Lakehouse, thought that was really good! Was amazed at how little credits were at the end of the film...lol i guess then again that it was afterall about two people who were quite isolated in their life& were brought together in the end:) Wont say no to Keanu Reeves !!haha
also saw Georgia rule...was actually a random selection I did at the cinema and took a chance...it was okay...LOL

i am insanely obsessed with all of the Saw movies and squealed loudly when i found out that there was a 4th instalment (i knew they were making one i just didn't know when it was going to be released). my friend, Paul and i are obsessed but his boyfriend refuses to watch them - scaredy cat! i've made my friend watch each instalment, one at a time for the last 2 weekends so he has one more to go this weekend. it's too much to watch them back to back. i just wanna know what B grade actor they'll have in the next one....?

I read it a while ago, its a really good book. The film follows a much more conventional narrative structure than the book. The book feels more like a documentary than the film. Both are good in their own ways.

The last movie I saw in the theaters was a french movie called "Le scaphandre et le papillon" (The Diving Bell And The Butterfly). I didn't like it so much tbh. But another movie I saw few months ago was "The Bucket List" with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. I recommend that one, it's entertaining. :)
I would also like to recommend La Môme, also known as La Vie En Rose. It's from 2007, but I only saw it this year. It's the life of Édith Piaf. I was very impressed by it and it made me cry.
