I'm surprised there's no JBT thread to date here.

Anyway, the boys have hit the big time. They'll be playing on the David Letterman Show tonight, on Channel 9 at 1am, and since the music act comes on last, this translates to 1:50am. Well, they already did, earlier this afternoon, which is last night for New Yorkers.

Good on them. Who would've thunk, a blues-rock guy who used to busk around Western Austraya and Byron would end up having a spot on Letterman. Onya boys. Knock 'em dead.

I saw em at falls, quite good but IMHO i still can't see how holding our glowsticks in the air is goona stop em cutting down our trees. BTW apparently we agreed to take gunns to court with him- i'm not sure if that's legally binding though.

Zebra it was. John did his usual facial contortions thing during the bridge, which was captured perfectly with a great close-up shot that went for as long as he did it.

I was hoping for What You Want, but that'll do me just fine.

haha... just read this on the jbt boards... quite amusing

"John Butler Trio adds to tsunami suffering

John Butler: also had the crowds fleeing in terror

The tsunami crisis worsened last night, when unpopular folk group the John Butler Trio performed at the WaveAid concert, sweeping away scores of concert goers in a tide of self-righteousness and shitty music.

“When the tsunami occurred, we called for Australians to show compassion and take some time for sombre reflection” said James Cassidy of the Australian Red Cross. “But at no point did we call for a twat in a tea cosy to subject the public to forty minutes of hippie roots music.”

John Butler, however, has denied that his involvement in the concert was unwelcome. “Charity events are my chance to give something back, and I always enjoy playing to an audience, even if they have come to see other acts and pelt me with rubbish.”

Shannon Tennant was one of those who witnessed the tragedy unfold. “There was a strange calm after the first song – it was eerily peaceful. The only sound was of people leaving. Then you got a terrible sense that Butler was going to attempt a ham-fisted analogy about a wave of inequality swamping the world every day. And sure enough, he managed to tie the tsunami to the war in Iraq, the hole in the ozone layer, greedy big business, and his son Banjo.”

“I was powerless to do anything about it. I got a real sense of what people who saw the first wave coming must have felt.”

The performance is Butler’s seventh appearance at a charity benefit this month, which the star ascribes to his social conscience, and the fact that no promoter will pay him to appear.'

a review & some more recent photos :)

Fuji Rock Festival '05 Japan

'I arrived early to catch one of the my most anticipated shows at FujiRock this year, to find myself surrounded by fellow Aussies. Such is the popularity of this fresh act. Yes, The John Butler Trio has in recent years become one of Australia's most celebrated and acclaimed acts, yet with my country hopping over the last few years, I had never managed to pull it together to see them. Despite little to no mainstraeam radio support, this group have found themselves a dedicated following.

http://www2.fujirockexpress.com/05/input/img/report/main/894_1_1.jpg

As soon as they appeared on stage though, their true appeal started to show, with those Japanese fans moving quickly to the front to prove that the Trio's appeal is universal. the set started with Butler on slide guitar, introducing the band with a slow building track with a definate Indian flair. The trio is rounded out by Michael Barker on Drums (including Bongo and Shannon Birchall on Bass, alternating between bass guitar & double bass. The great sound produced by these three provides a welcome relief from the electric and often seemingly impersonal performances of the weekend. This fairly intimate performance was driven by Butlers acoustic 12 string guitar, and was greatly enjoyed by the appreciative crowd. Something's Gotta Give followed soon afterwards, and certainly something did as the audience was soon bouncing to the tune.

http://www2.fujirockexpress.com/05/input/img/report/main/894_2_1.jpg

The JBT's songs are often more of a musaical journey, and end up much stretched out over the album edits. you can see Butler reading the srowd and altering the piece to suit the mood. There is a strong drum presence over many of thier songs, but their is no doubt that Butler on guitar is what this band is about, reflected by the fact that the other two members have changed several times in the band's history. I Hope To Go is a beautiful instrumental roller coaster ride of a guitar piece performed by Butler with no help from the other band members. It was particularaly apt rolling over the hills of Naeba on this overcast day, flowing from serene into frenetic moments and back again. This was followed by Betterman, another piece that started out as a guitar solo, but was shortly complemented by both drums & bass, and ended up with a solo of each, showing Birchall's & Barker's talents as musicians in their own right.

http://www2.fujirockexpress.com/05/input/img/report/main/894_3_1.jpg

The group finished the set with their two biggest hits, and Butler implored all present to get their dancing shoes on. Their signature tune "Zebra" from the latest release was well recieved, and saw Butler picking up the Harmonica for a short spell.

http://www2.fujirockexpress.com/05/input/img/report/main/894_4_1.jpg

All in all, the John Butler Trio provided a welcome relief from the fast pace of many of the other acts I have seen here at FujiRock. Well worth the wait!'

from triple j news...

Butler Street Jam

The John Butler Trio have just played a round of shows all across Europe and aussie ex-pat Dave Szumowski caught the tail end of the tour in Lille, up in the north of France.

He actually missed out on seeing a free gig the trio had scheduled in a local department store... when he underestimated the size of JBT's fan base in the area and arrived too late to squeeze in.

But Dave managed to catch an impromptu performance when John Butler himself decided not to disappoint the hundred odd fans that were waiting in the street.

"He came out with the band and just walked through the crowd, took their instruments, went over to the side of the street and they just, they went off. Acoustic, just as if they were busking. We were looking around and there were people hanging out the office windows just checking out what's going on."

The John Butler Trio are now back in Australia for the Homeward Bound national tour... that kicks off in Adelaide on December sixth.

Said it once and you know i can say it again
you are the best thing that ever came into my life
so why do i always got to defend
you from yourself standing guard over a slow suicide

Did you really think that i, just would compromise
no i waited for you
i waited for you
did you think i stumbled into you in the dark with closed eyes
no i waited for you
waited for you

And i know, you could see what i can see
if you just, had my eyes
and i know, i could be what, i wanted to be
if i just believed you
and i know this is just another valley
we got hills to climb, years to find, hills to climb.

Said it once and i know i will say it again
you are the gift as bright as that sun does shine
but to stand in the shadows that you cast all day
cant walk through this place in light, like you were blind

Did you really think that i, just would compromise
no i waited for you
i waited for you
did you think i stumbled into you in the dark with closed eyes
no i waited for you
waited for you
Just another, lucky dip and you were my prize
no i waited for you
i waited for you
I was just a cold night waiting for the, sun to rise
Yes i waited for you
i waited for you

And i know, you could see what i can see
if you just, had my eyes
and i know, i could be what, i wanted to be
if i just believed you
and i know this is just another valley
we got hills to climb, years to find, hills to climb.
Hills to climb
Hills to climb
Hills to climb
Hills to climb

We, go, where to be what to be
Just what, you want me to see
whole world blind
whole world bilnd
oh such a tradgedy
oh loss of dignity????
such a crime
such a crime

Hey, way out there
in the New Orleans where the people were left for dead
and Katrina came in
and the Gov did nothing
leaving all those people on their heads
and the water rose
and the gov just froze
thinking everything gonna be fine
everyone thinkin' as the city was sinkin'
does the guy on tv, is he blind.
yeah, is he blind

So for four long days and four long nights those people were left alone
and the whole world watch as the gov did nothin
thinkin of the world wide home
the media was there filmin' all the despair
they were the first ones on the ground
and the whole world wondered how the gov could do nothin'
it was obvious and profound

yeah, another storm coming
better cover our heads
shit gonna hit the fan
yeah man, cos the gov did nothin!

A nation cries while the gov did nothin
and a nation cries while the gov did nothin
and a dream dies while the gov did nothin
and a nation cries while the gove did nothin

Now i dont mean to offend
i dont mean to start a fight
but do you really think that the gov did nothin if all those people were white
and over through regimes seen to rewrite history itself
but democracies and freedom man it don't mean nothin' if all them people you don't help
but democracies and freedom man it dont mean nothin' if all them people you don't help

yeah, another storm coming
better cover our heads
shit gonna hit the fan
yeah man, cos the gov did nothin!
another storm coming
better cover our heads
shit gonna hit the fan
yeah man, cos the gov did nothin!

A nation cries while the gov did nothin
and the whole world cries while the gov did nothin
and a dream dies while the gov did nothin
and a nation cries while the gove did nothin

The gov did nothin

The gov did nothin.
The gov did nothin.
The gov did nothin.
The gov did nothin.
The gov did nothin.
The gov did nothin.
The gov did nothin.
