View Full Version : Signature Limits

Don't wanna be a stick in the mud, and i'm not sure it's even my place to bring it up as I haven't been on here for some months, and you probably don't even know me, but browsing the forum again for the first time in a while i've noticed that alot of people have signatures that are completely excessive and out of control.
Most other forums i own/mod/frequent they limit how big signature images can be. In most cases it's a maximum height of 100pixels. So that it's only banner type images can be posted.
Some of the sigs on here have multiple images that are more than 200 pixels high...it's amazing.
Just wondering if anyone else has an issue with this? It just makes the board very hard to read, and also makes what is already an image heavy forum, REALLY tough on dialup users, and Cable users with a download limit.
Just putting it out there...don't go rank just yet!

yeah, i agree... my sig was over the top... ive been meaning to change it for a while.
ive noticed pages taking ages to load for me (shitty dialup) & it does make the board hard to read.

Ideally, yes. But both of you are doing surprisingly well compared to some i've seen today.
Generally I'd limit sigs to 100px high and 550px across which is wider than your average web advertisement banner. Then you can have a bit of text and it doesn't get out of hand. Once you go past 150pixels high you start getting major scrolling on most pages and in my opinion it makes everything harder to read.
It's a great community here, and it'd be a shame if stuff like this was keeping people away. I know I wouldn't leave, but i'm certainly not rushing here to post amongst piles of excessive junk signatures.

Yeah, it could help.
Alot of people think they can't get any info or good pictures into such a small image, but believe me, you can do anything you want to, you just gotta put some effort in!
Think of it as a challenge, to make small sigs! Hahahhaa.

...and you can always create a gif that scrolls through a number of banners that promote various interests etc.

Thank you Rockabilly. I had brought this up earlier in a couple of other threads but didn't want to sound too draconian. I thought it best to let everyone use their own judgement to keep their sigs in check. I completely agree that the size of some sigs are very excessive and that it would deter a lot of our friends on slower connections in signing up and/or staying active.
That's why I had in mind in offering each member a mini-webpage of sorts linked from their profile to use as their own little gallery. I'll try and get that up and running asap and then we can set some stricter sig guidelines. Sound fair?

sounds good astro :D
Yep, 100x500 is about right, most of my sigs I've made are 80x450 and smaller..

Thanks Astro! Sounds good.
I know everyone wants to showcase their abilities, or their gig count or whatever, but you don't need 5 wallpaper size images to do it! Without trying to offend anyone, i'm honestly more inclined to take notice of the small banners, and discount the others as dickheads who are wasting my time and download limit!
I'd definately be more happy to come back if things get cut back to size...thanks for taking everything on board (so to speak!)
