View Full Version : Introducing Myself

Hey Everyone,
I'm new to this board (obviously) and I figured I'd introduce myself here.
First of all, I am a huge music fan, can't play or sing at all, but I just love music - I'm always listening to it or always looking to check out new music.
The type of music I like is generally different to most 16 year olds - I really dig country music (alt-country stuff like Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch, Old 97s, Kasey Chambers etc.) and artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Black Crowes and of course Gram Parsons - the guy in my avatar. *Gram's concept was to create music that had no boundaries - he called it 'Cosmic American Music' which mixed country, rock, soul, rnb, folk and melded it into something amazing. *Anyway, I'll stop talking about Gram because I don't want you people to think I'm only here to blabber on about Gram.
I've only just recently got into Missy, but I really dig her stuff - her phrasing is awesome and very unique and you just believe every single thing she sings about - great performer. *I can't wait to catch her live, she's really blowing me away at the moment. *Plus she's opened my eyes up to the amazing music scene that's happening in Australia
One last thing, I'm also really into trading live shows (all totally legal and with consent from the artists) my list is at www.tapetrader.com/surrealist - if anyone wants to check out some great music, drop me a line and I'll send you a show.
Anyway, that's enough rambling - this place looks to be a great place.
Peace,
Surrealist
Yeah thought i'd introduce myself as well
i am also a recent converter to missy, i went to her concert at the metro about *3 weeks ago now and it was unbelievable! best concert i've been to in like 4 years! really excited to see where she goes from here.
never really listened to JJJ so i had no idea who she was apart from 'scar'.
I am also wuite eclectic in my music taste. i am a big country music fan as well. the dixie chicks are my favourite band! love the girls work.
can't really think of what else to put in here.
i'm 20? and i study childcare coz i'ma really big kid myself!
can't think

Hey Vivy,
Are you a basketball fan? *Your avatar looks like the Seattle Storm logo-y thing. *Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the team Lauren Jackson plays for, right?
I used to be totally into basketball back when I played it heaps. *I quit playing once I made state cos all the fun went out of it, but I still totally love watching it, and Lauren Jackson is an absolutely amazing player.
If I'm wrong, totally ignore this little post lol.
Almost forgot to add, have you thought about seeing Missy at Newcastle? She's playing there the day after Homebake (5th December) and I think tix are still available - that way you won't have to miss her. http://missyhiggins.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Nothing wrong with that shenelle
it's probably better than OCMD being (Obsessive Complusing Missy Disorder)
that could get a little freaky!

hey surrealist,
yep you are correct, that is a seattle storm logo, that is the team Jackson plays for and i am a basketball fan - but not as big as i used to be. ive been following the storm ever since Jackson started playing for them and to the Storm winning the WNBA championship was so good!! i listened to the game online HAHA http://missyhiggins.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif and yeh Jackson is an awesome player and only 23 years old! and i feel kinda guilty, i dont follow the WNBL as much as the WNBA now, because i feel the WNBL is, well...boring....i hate to say it but compared to the WNBA it is slower and boring. but i still go for the Flames...good to see Trish Fallon back.
i used to play as well but i lost interest after a few seasons, i dont know why but now im a mad soccer freak http://missyhiggins.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif !!!!!
newcastle - i might consider that and it is closer to sydney then tamworth lol. i'll have a think, thanks for that!

(surrealist @ Nov. 09 2004,19:35)]Lauren Jackson is an absolutely amazing player.
That's an understatement. She was (and debatably still is) the best female basketballer in the world. So she didn't win MVP this year, i think it'sd fair to say she's only gonna get better!
On other note, the local WNBL has gone downhill alot, which is dissapointing, it used to be really big, but even my home team doesn't play at the Powerhouse anymore, they play at a suburban hall. It's a shame that they don't play before NBL games, because as a 36ERs season ticket holder i used to love seeing the <s>lycra-clad bodies</s> ladies playin good ball before the main match.
Anyway, we've hit the bottom, but it's starting to look like the NBL and hopefully the WNBL is rising in popularity again. I just wish we could get Free To Air TV coverage again...that's what's holding it back.

i totally agree with you rockabilly - the popularity has gone down. even the flames have had to be in partnership with Sydney Uni to get a team. when the the past, the Kings were happy to support them. now it seems they are 2 different entities which is sad http://missyhiggins.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
im glad ABC are loyal to the WNBL with a weekly game on TV but the same story with soccer - no free to air coverage which makes it difficult for the sport to progress

I agree with both of you that Australian basketball is having problems due to the promotion and publicity it gets. But, I do think a big problem, especially with the WNBL is that the way it is being played doesn't particularly encourage support. I used to love watching the WNBL, but these days, Vivy's right, it's boring. I mean the stadiums they play in have pretty much the same seating capacity as the ones I used to play in a couple of years ago for under 16s tournaments. The only difference being that there was generally bigger crowds at our competitions - something just isn't right there.
I think if we want to promote basketball in Australia, we really have to come up with a better angle. My theory on the unpopularity of the game in Australia is due to the overwhelming popularity of it in the US. I mean, if you look at most of our 'national' games (ie. Rugby League, Aussie Rules, Cricket) they are games that America either don't compete in, or suck at, and also games that Australia dominates in (for the most part.) So I really don't know where I'm going with this little story, but basically the quality in the WNBL is sadly, severely lacking. As a result, most of our top players who could be identifiable and really raise the profile of the sport, play overseas. And that is nothing against those players, it is the smart decision - because at the moment, what can Australian basketball offer? I know I'm glad that I gave up any dreams of playing professionally a long time ago.
I have high hopes for the NBL, because there is a lot of good, recognisable Australian talent (plus Gaze is a wonderful ambassador), and the talks of spreading the comp. through Asia are very encouraging. But you guys are right, it would make more sense for a. women's teams to play before the men's again and b. to bring some games back to free-to-air viewing.
This little introduction thread has turned into quite the rant-fest...I like it.

haha this discussion is becoming more and more like the ones i have about soccer (football http://missyhiggins.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif) and what needs to be done is pretty much the same thing.
each of the sports respective associations needs to step up and find new ways to market and promote the game to the wider public. invest in youth deveopment - especially the women now that sporn, brondello, batkovic etc are likly to retire, especially from international basketball...and we need the opals to take that olympic gold from the yanks!! (even though i am a huge sue bird fan lol)
but what basketeball has is andrew gaze.
he always openly supports both the men & the womens game and i hope he can help get the game in this country back on track. no reform, no crawford like report - just someone to come out and say hey, aussies are great at basketball, come, watch & have a good time.
