What guitars do you own and why?
It's interesting to know what brands of guitars people choose and their reason for buying them. Did you buy it because it was cheap? Somebody gave it to you? It was a guitar you just had to have?
i have a few guitars. 3 were given to me, and the others i bought cos i was bored.

Well my guitar was a present.
Its a Samick. Nothing brilliant but sounds ok. Just acoustic.
I have a slide which I have hardly picked up since I bought it 4 months ago. can only play 1 song so far! Im neglecting it.
Its an Oakridge.. which I dont think is a brilliant guitar. And i paid a fair bit for it.. I think the guy ripped me off.
Im looking at these beautiful Maton guitars at the CD shop down the road. I just go there to look at them sometimes. they are beautiful! But I cant afford one rite now,
Has anybody heard of Saunders Guitars? I have no idea how well known they r or anything... Turns out this guy lives in my city. They are really expensive, but sooooo detailed!

I used to have a Samick years ago. Sold it to buy a Maton which I never managed to save enough for. Too many bills. Just had to resort to same as you - to look at them in the shop.
Saunders guitars may be similar to West guitars here in Adelaide. Fretco - a guitar repairer also makes their own 'West guitars'. They are really nice sounding guitars, but barely anybody has heard of them. But then I think of some of the brand name guitars out there for about the same money... I'd be inclined to go a custom if it works out about the same. As long as you've happy with what you've seen & heard.

I have an Ibanez Acoustic Electric
And a West 5 String bass
I'm looking at getting an OLP Musicman electric soon too.
And I'm a lefty. Best thing about being a lefty... no impromtu performances & nobody ever wants to borrow your gear keeping it in schmick condition.
That's all I have currently. I'd bore you what I used to have. (Pictures a granny opening her purse and a trail of family photos unveiling before you)

When you have a combination of money being tight and feeling as though an unco blind deaf mute can play better than you on a good day...
I will never part with my bass... It's too sentimental to me. Then again... Some of my guitars I got rid of all those years ago, I feel like an adoptive mother trying to find their child.
I had a fully sik bass rig that I had to sell coz I lost my job and needed cash between jobs. That sucked. The music shop got a huge bargain.

I dont remember what guitar I have! Its nothing special! Its the first guitar I bought! I went out on an impulse and bought a guitar. cost me just over $140 or something like that. I dont know what it is, but it looked sext so I bought it.
I plan on buying myself a better guitar - a Maton Acoustic/electric to be precise. I have to prove to myself that I want to continue playing guitar, and i have to get lessons and learn how to play propperly before I will fork out that much cash tho!
I like the Maton guitars - cos I think they look sexy, they sound awesome and i just like em! Also Missy has one! :p

i would never smash one of my guitars over my head besides the fact it would hurt, i love my guitars too much. My first one was a really cheap Ashton nylon string acoustic, i still have it and my other one is a Takamine acoustic electric and its sick! i love it it sounds so good abd it has a built in tuner in the pick up. :p I always buy for the sound and the feel of the guitar the brand doens't worry me so much but it has a little to do with it.

I wanted a Maton EM325C in L/H. I feel descriminated against coz it'd cost me more.
Considering I was going from a $500 to a $2000 guitar if I went for the Maton I wanted, I figured I better go for an $800 guitar which kicks arse! My ibanez... The fact that I stopped playing for 5 years couldn't justify the price of the Maton either... But I can still dream.
And yeah, I won't let any of my friends or family buy a guitar or anything like that when they're starting without my help. I took my niece and nephew amp shopping coz their parents know jack about music gear. We got a cool 65W Fender amp for a bargain price.

My guitar is more a 'childs plaything' than an instrument!
I got it for my 8th birthday & I don't think my parents thought I'd really ever play it so they just got a little 3/4 cheapo!
With good reason though, it took me six years to pick the damn thing up!
It's never in tune these days though so I play a gorgeous Yamaha elec/acoustic.
It has a really beautiful sound, quite thin and really easy to play - very much wish it was mine!
Oh & there's the fender strat too, but it desperately needs new strings so I hardly ever play it.
I'm saving up for an Ovation, or maybe a Maton... Should have that by summer 2012! :D

I used to have a garage sale special. Now I have a Washburn acoustic. It is very sexy. Was sitting in the corner of the first shop i went into, slightly damaged so got it for a bargain. I couldn't let it stay there being unloved just cause it was slightly flawed. I always shop with my heart and I never know anything about brands!

Crikey, so many guitarists! its awesome! Love the music people ;)
My first guitar was a little tiny 3/4 nylon god knows what brand but did me proud none the less for many years, then i graduated to stealing my dads... brand?? but it was this gorgeous cherry sunburst which has inspired my latest edition. the first one i can claim as my very own i only got 3 years ago (after playing for 12 years) and its a great little Fender nothing special acoustic electric slim line cutaway- since i'm such a sprout dreadnaughts are just too awkward! But I just love this little beast, it certainly won't be disappearing from the collection! After that this sparkley blue cheapy martinez acoustic caught my eye at a store in st kilda and i had to have it... its certainly nothing special to listen to but my my its just so gaudy i couldn't resist! Its good for camping and dragging around!
Finally, I picked up my newest edition four weeks ago which i have worked my a*# off for and which took 6 months of planning and 3 months to build, but from the second i saw it, it was clearly worth every hour, cent and bead of sweat! So, i'm now the ridiculously proud owner of a custom Maton 808 acoustic electric cutaway which just knocks my socks off every time i strum it! Even the music shop guys love it... i took it back for its first service last week and they rushed over crying... "its back, its back"!! If you saw Last Man Standing a couple of weeks ago when Bruno got the Maton he'd 'longed after'.... i was the female version ;) if anyone's interested in the specs i'll be happy to fill you in... don't want to bore you any more now!

i own 4 guitars. in the order from best to crappiest:
1. Ibanez JS1000 joe satriani signature model in burnt transparent blue. This is an awesome guitar, pick ups are totally wicked. and very, very light weight. the fretboard is designed so that you could play ultra-fast and effortless. this guitar costed me $1200 secondhand (i think brand new is $3500, but then music shops in australia are a total rip off). here's a pic of my baby:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/therealjetpilot/JS1000_4.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/therealjetpilot/JS1000_6.jpg
i play a lot of guitar virtuso, this is just the guitar i had to have. also awesome for metal guitar stuff.
2. Epiphone SG. only good for hard rock and classic stuff. pick ups need chaning. paid just under 1k.
3. no-brand eletric (fender strat copy). crap, crap, crap. it was my first eletric
4. no-brand acoustic. crap, crap, crap. my first acoustic.
i also have a range of BOSS effects but need a decent amp.
future plans:
1. buying a maton acoustic!
2. buy an amp.

Is that a regular thing? The Clearance??? I went to one at the beginning of the year with the annoying Mr Bankrupt thing they had on at our showgrounds. The commercial looked like there was heaps of stuff there. When we got there, there was heaps of manchester and clothes and a section no bigger than my bedroom with a few very over priced guitars and very poor condition gear. Can find better gear at Cash Converters
My neice wants a bass like that guitar.

nah it was like all the discontinued stuff, way cheaper than RRP, there were trumpets, clarinets, matons, ibanez, fender, pianos, amps, bass, and some of the musical equipment was provided from allans music, like instruments that were scratched and stuff. We got there early and there was already heaps of people lining up outside, and after about an hour, half of the guitars were already off their stands and sold. Doubt there'd be any good instruments left for Sunday

My electric was my b/day present to myself a few weeks back. My bass amp I bought last weekend... well that's a belated present. I would've bought it back then, but I was going to buy a different amp and decided to just go for this one coz its LOUDER and looks like a cool chick rig! My acoustic... well.... I dunno, what happened there... It just happened. :D
And yeah, I was surprised to see how many guitarists we have in the forum.

I DO! My first guitar that was all mine was a little Fender! I still love it! But, alas, my Maton has stolen my heart. I should change my name huh!
I should post a pic of of it... it has the same paint job as Missy's actually (vintage amber) but its completely (well not completely, but a lot) different. its a matte finish, so it looks really old and vintage! i love it i love it!
Oh, and artists on the whole still have to buy their instruments (i'm 90% sure from the guy from Maton that i spoke to) but of course not at the same prices as us lesser mortals!

Any suggestions for a good left handed guitar for a beginner? People have suggested one of those value packs like the Squier something something.. (but I think they only come in right handed ones)and also an Ibanez or Fender guitar.

I have 5 guitars. A Gibson Les Paul Custom, a Monterey Les Paul Classic style, a Magnum Stratocaster style guitar, a Washburne acoustic and a Cataluna acoustic, which is crap, lol.
I want either a Gibson X-plorer, a Squier Stratocaster or a hollowbody. Preferably the hollowbody, I love those. :D

Then an SX acoustic
And now I have an Ashton Dualler
I've just bought an amp and am saving up for an electric..
What brand should I get? I want to spend around $400.
yeah, most Classical guitars (and Ukes) have nylon strings. Most artists use steel strings tho, but there are a few around that use nylon, like ARIA award winning "best Artist" Clare Bowditch!

I loooove guitars!!!! I have a Fender Strat but replaced a few bits and pieces so to Katify it. It's a cream colour with a Zebra pattern scratch plate. I love it. Also a magnum steel string acoustic which is good for a twang and a classical magnum too!! I really want and Ibanez something or other with wineburst colouring, they look great.

yes, yes... definately have a play... take ur time and try HEAPS.. u'll find one u love, then the next week u'll find another one that you love even more... its easy to do when u start playing in the shops...

Mmmmmmm yeah. I'll have to start saving..
Any ideas for electric guitar brands?
teknocrat
12-03-2007, 12:34 PM
Martin are great, probably my favourite acoustic brand. If moneys not an issue then yeah maton and martin acoustics are top of the line, but you can get a great sounding guitar without spending heaps, i got an Ibanez dreadnaught acoustic for about $400 and i reckon it sounds better than my friends maton.
When it comes to electrics, the generic brands are gibsons/epiphone, fender, Ibanez and stuff, though personally i think the really good electrics are those vintage brands like Gretsch and Rickenbacker (though they cos a bit more). So you dont necessarily need to get a new one from a store, some of the old second hand ones are great.
I think the best way to go is to just shop around heaps before you buy one, try them out in stores and make sure its comfortable to play.
GoTheHiggsta
12-03-2007, 01:51 PM
Another place worthy of a look is the cash converter type pawn broker stores too, have a play and then go elsewhere.... ;)
Generally these places have over priced guitars, but at least you can look and touch without any pressure to buy.

Gibsons are pretty bangin, the Les Paul's are especially awesome...probably my favourite type of Gibson so far. They're a reliable brand though so if your thinking of getting one they aren't a bad choice.

I'm heaps excited.. Just need to save up and convince mum to let me get one..
Have I already replied in this thread? I dunno, anyway I bought a new one last week so I'll post anyway...
I have a Maton (same as the one Missy uses sometimes, not the old maton that she's been usung heaps lately, but the new one that she has sometimes) EGB808 full body parlor guitar...
And my new baby, a little baby Taylor, very cute, but much easier to play and had a gorgeous sound too!
I also have a cheapie Samik which I never play, I might get rid of that one
willowfred
28-03-2007, 05:23 PM
A pic of my Ashton Dualler can be found in the Photographs thread..

Jeez, if you were looking at a Les Paul it'll probably cos a bit :p They're a great guitar though, nice size and weight and great little humbucker pick ups, if i wasn't so into hollow body's id definitely get one of them.
