View Full Version : STML The Wildhearts Bri's selection
Ok here's the latest band English rockers The Wildhearts.
After talking to a couple of ya I've gone for a bit of a departure from the singer songwriter stuff with a full out rock band.
Big riffs, sometimes catchy choruses, cynical smart lyrics, and influences from AC/DC and Mettalica to Cheap Trick and the Ramones.
Will do a proper track by track comment later but gotta run for work.

do the channel bop! OH GOOD IS THIS SONG!! it sounds like its influenced right outta metallica's load catalogue during the heavy riffs - im loving this music :) im all excited hahaha
actually maybe reload as well ;) cause there are moments when i almost feel like singing "choking on a bad seeeeeeeed" haha veryyyy metallica :)
oh im diggin this cd :)
Ok then here goes for a review of sorts.
Hardest thing was trying to pick a list of songs out of the 160 or so tracks I have by this band
Eventually narrowed it down to about enough to fill and 80min blank cd
Tried to put a set in that covers the different styles of the band rather than go for just my personal fave’s.
My Baby is a Headfuck
From their first full length album ‘Earth versus the Wildhearts’. The first song I ever heard by these guys seen em on a long forgotten rock show doing this live, all stage invasion crowd surfing etc and I was hooked from the start. The riffs, the attitude, the energy, the lyrics. This song is notable as it contains one of the last things recorded by the late Mick Ronson (of David Bowie fame) who played the slide guitar solo.Suffering from terminal illness the guy was literally at deaths door during the recording (you’d never know it from his playing here) The band actually said to his wife that they felt he was too ill and they didn’t want to make him any worse but were told that heading into the studio and playing was what was keeping him going.
I wanna go where the people go
First single from the PHUQ album quite a straightforward structure compared to some of their tracks a good, noisy, fairly instant track. Typically of the Wildhearts the lyrics spare no’one, even themselves “rid of the clichés that go round and around, I wanna be where the ****s like me are buried six feet underground”
29x the pain
Basically a love song to their favourite bands. There are at least 18 bands name checked here in some form or another but there may be more. All about how the music you love keeps you company and gets you through sometimes.
TV Tan
Another one from the Earth versus album. Big riffs hooks a plenty. An ode to couch potato’s. Songs about being stuck in front of the telly with nothing better to do than drink smoke and surf the remote should be boring but this rocks.
Red Light Green Light
Pretty much a straight out rock n roll song. Heavy, fast n catchy. It's taken from a disputed record company release of the Fishing for Luckies album, a record the band recorded for the fan club only as a thank you. Then the record company tacked some other tracks on and issued it on general release much to the bands disgust.
Do the Channel Bop
More ideas in this than in some bands whole albums. At nearly eight minutes there’s everything from Metallica riffs to choruses sung by a school choir. The song’s sorta about the way you have to switch channels in your mind to drown out people who wont stop talking rubbish.
Sick of drugs
One of the bands highest charting singles a somewhat tongue in cheek denouncement of drugs
Caffeine bomb
Two and a half minutes of rocket fuelled punk rock about the singers favourite hangover remedy. Was introduced on Top of the Pops as "the song that’s gonna make your dad come in the room and say what the hell is that”
The People that life forgot
About not getting dragged down by the kind of people that wont let anyone in close and who criticise others while living in sad little bubbles.
And the Bullshit goes on
Straight out response from the band to their record company’s meddling, interfering and double dealing.
Weekend
Anthem about making it through the working week to reach the weekend really early song that still stands up pretty well
Schizophonic
Another long one bursting out with riffs all over the shop. About playing music for the love of playing it and ignoring fashion trends or trying to fit in with what the media decide is hot. As one line in the song says “If there’s a sound you play, that doesn’t fit today. Why not just play the bastard anyway”.
Vanilla Radio
Probably the simplest song on here about looking in vain for something worthwhile on UK commercial radio. With the one line chorus asking “where’s my Elvis”
Greetings from Shitsville
Not exactly a love song to London. some nice heavy riffs and cutting lyrics about life in the capital. From the Earth versus album still a favourite in their live set
Nothing ever changes but the shoes
Another early song that has stood the test of time from their debut EP chock full of riffs and still demanded at virtually every gig by the fans who were there when the band started out.
Nexus Icon
Heavy fast and pissed off attack on stars who are more interested in their image and the perks of being famous than actually creating anything worthwhile.

ok this has had a ridiculously low amount of replies and im gonna do my super late review now..
the opener in the list for me nehow is my baby is a headfuck... this song just has fun written all over it. catchy tune, funny lyrics, with cameo riffs from the beatles and the beach boys! not to mention a solo in there that i cant put my finger on just yet but yeh, love that as an opener :)
track 2 - i like the song as well, cool lil riffs in it. reminds me kinda of a summer pop song with distorted guitars haha.
tracks 3 and 4 - they dont really stand out to me but they arent bad songs. just songs that are a comfortable listen i feel, kinda background rock music. nothing much else i can say bout those.
red light green light - not a bad song, the intro is kinda trippy (kinda reminds me of alice in chains lmfao). then it hits their signiture punk riffs/singing, which is evident in the chorus for me. i think you can hear sex pistols, buzzcocks, ramones... their influences through a lot of their tunes.
do the channel bop - it is metallica written all over it in the opening riffs, then the song just progresses throughout and i think its a definite winner. maybe the best of the selection.
sick of drugs - reminds me of tracks 2 and 3, where it doesnt really stand out so much for me. the chorus is very catchy though
caffeine bomb - this sounds like a punk song from the early 90s in the intro, gets u moving and such. i like it. its a song id play first to a bunch of my mates that are into that punk scene. they would absolutely dig it
the people that life forgot - ahh the intro sounds like it belongs to friends or something lmfao. to me this song just shows the fun they must have when recording and writing songs. kinda slopping in a few riffs they did, changing them up a lil and running with it.
and the bullshit goes on - again not the most memorable of the bunch to me, but its a grower.
weekend - just not a big fan of this tune to be honest
schizophrenic - i like this song lol. i must have a thing for long songs yeh? haha this song has a lot in it, the guitar i think is cool, the lil break downs are wicked. i give props out to it for sure.
track 13 - the guitar in it sounds like it could be from a rob or white zombie album, ie the high pitched stuff. then i like the song though, pretty simple, catchy, and has a bit of heaviness to it that i dig.
greetings from shitsville - sounds like the 3 little pigs song um "little pigs let me in let me in" by umm green jelly or whatever haha. wel the intro does. then i loveee the riff used, sounds very familiar. i like it when these guys get a bit heavier, i think it suits and puts them apart from the other punkers.
track 15 - not a bad tune - but i dont know what i can say about it. much the same as before i dig the guitar. i think the lead guitars and the riffs they make are cool.
nexus icon - nice way to finish the wildhearts experience. again sums up their punk sounding catchy riffs, with a catchy chorus with metal influenced guitars.
overall though i think they are a good fun band to listen to. they arent a band i listen to over and over, but they are a band when u put on u go hey this is cool, fun stuff. nothing really complicated about them, pretty simple, but it sounds like they sure do know how to rock out, and would be a fun live band to see.
i give em a 6.5/10 closing on a 7.
i think that people should really give these guys a go :) its a shame about the lack of replies...
